About the artist

Hi, I’m Joanna

I’m a gardener, parent, artist and waterways engineer in Perth, Western Australia on Whadjuk Noongar Country. I've lived in Western Australia my whole life, and have been all over the south west - but I admit I haven’t been north of Perth more than once! I love how I can find flowers at any time of year, and there are so many plants with interesting foliage.

I usually paint with watercolour, but I also play with other tools and techniques.

I am excited about working with other small businesses to create beautiful products for their customers, as well as encourage sustainable products and be part of the circular economy. It’s important to me that the entire lifecycle of a product is considered when developing it.

Exhibition and events

I’ve shown my work at 2 exhibitions so far. Darlington Arts Festival in 2023 and Temp200 in 2024.

I’ve run a stall at markets since 2022, when I ran my first market at the Herdsman Wildlife Centre’s Wildlife Show! I’ve been all over Perth and am hoping to do more across WA. I run market stalls with my mum Jessica, who creates pottery for the garden. She hand makes each piece, and her range includes mosquito coil holders, vases, ollas and a new range of hanging wall pots for air plants.

You can find out when I’ll be at my next market!

Putting the Art in “STEM”

Bringing nature into our spaces has always been a passion of mine. I have a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering (Hons) from the University of Western Australia. I have worked on projects in Perth and across Western Australia, collecting samples of soil and water to guide designs and construction of projects and care for our environment, and designing stormwater drainage with Water Sensitive Urban Design elements. I currently work as a Urban Water Project Officer at a local government.

Inspiration in my garden

I take my inspiration from my garden, bushwalks and my community in Western Australia. I love creating designs others can enjoy every day, that also make them a little bit more aware of the nature around them! I’ve been working on my native garden for a few years, and currently grow a variety of natives including grevilleas, emu bush (eremophila), dryandra and trigger plants. I also have a large bottlebrush tree that feeds the local wildlife year round.

My garden is not only natives. I also have a collection of plums and nectarine trees along my back fence, and a growing collection of potted mulberries and blueberries.
